Chris Evans is Captain America

The casting search for Captain America is finally over. Marvel and Joe Johnston started with a list of potential actors who they felt could play the part including John Krasinski, Scott Porter, Mike Vogel, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Chace Crawford and Garret Hedlund. Until the list dropped down to Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund, Wilson Bethel, Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum and Chris Evans.

Marvel Studios and Director Joe Johnston have now confirmed that Chris Evans is Captain America. The deal calls for Evans to star in nine Marvel movies with at least three "Captain America" movies and will reprise his role in The Avengers, which will united Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton) in one film. That film is scheduled for May 4, 2012. The character also will likely make cameo appearances in Marvel's other films.

The First Avenger: Captain America is being directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, October Sky, The Wolfman) from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who both co-wrote the first two Chronicles of Narnia films. Also, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) is close to a deal to play the title character’s nemesis, Red Skull.

Shooting on Johnston’s flick will start this summer, and will hit cinemas on 22 July, 2011. Filming is set to begin at the end of June in the UK.

Personally, I would prefer Garrett Hedlund or Jensen Ackles of Supernatural to wield the iconic sheild.
